SALTO Systems Upgrades Four Seasons Washington DC with XS4 Electronic Locks & Accessories

The Four Seasons Hotel Washington DC is located just 12 blocks from the White House amidst the historical treasures of the United States’ capital city. With 200-plus guest rooms, the Four Seasons Hotel Washington DC is a contemporary standout and is the city’s only five-star, five-diamond luxury hotel. The recipient of TripAdvisor’s 2018 Travelers’ Choice Award, the property is filled with 1,650 original works of art and offers lavish comfort and unparalleled service.
The Four Seasons Hotel Washington DC sought an upgrade for its aging and obsolete access control system in 2015. Director of Security Sean Dunlevy and his team sought an electronic access control solution that was easy to install and manage and would meet the needs of the variety of areas throughout the hotel: 200-plus guest rooms, back of house operations and amenities like the pool and fitness center. In evaluating electronic locks and access control solutions, Dunlevy said they chose SALTO for the Four Seasons Hotel Washington DC because SALTO offers a wide assortment of products that met the property’s varying needs and the innovations they desired now, as well as for when they grow and expand the system.
Dunlevy and team installed a variety of SALTO offline electronic locks that operate using the innovative Salto Virtual Network (SVN). SVN allows stand-alone locks to read, receive, and write information via an encrypted and secure data-on-card system that utilizes the capabilities of RFID read/ write technology. With SVN, all access data is stored on and distributed by its operating smartcard (or other RFID device). When presenting a smartcard to an offline standalone door, not only does this control access rights to that door but, thanks to two-way communication, the door also writes data like blacklist information or battery status back to the smartcard. The smartcard then transmits this information back to the server via online wall readers that are able to update and receive information from the cards anytime and anywhere in the building.
SALTO products in use throughout the Four Seasons Hotel Washington DC include XS4 Escutcheons, XS4 GEO Cylinders, XS4 RIM Panic Bars, XS4 Wall Readers and Controllers. The system necessitated very little training, said Dunlevy. “Once the initial database is set up and uploaded, additions, deletions and changes are all very simple,” said Dunlevy. “Basic maintenance of the hardware is also very simple. Overall it is a user-friendly and intuitive system.”
Dunlevy said they have continued to add locks to back of house operations and have the ultimate goal of “being fully on SALTO and eliminating hard key sets for employees.” They also plan to upgrade the current SVN system to online for guest rooms in the future. Once online, they hope to integrate SALTO’s JustIN mobile application with the Four Seasons mobile app, which will allow guests to use a smartphone to securely access hotel rooms. Overall, Dunlevy said they are very pleased with SALTO and that other Four Seasons properties have since converted to SALTO based on their experience. “I have been extremely happy with our decision to move to SALTO for our locking system,” Dunlevy said. “It has proven to be a flexible, reliable and durable system, with seemingly unlimited potential for growth and expansion. I was actually the first to complete an install with Four Seasons, and based in part on the positive experience that we had at this hotel, numerous other Four Seasons properties have since converted or have installed prior to opening.”
