SALTO Systems & Central Security Integration Solutions Provide Access Control for New Lab ‘Tech Paradise’ Co-Engineering Space in NYC

Wednesday 15 November 2017

New Lab, New York

New Lab is a place and platform designed to support entrepreneurs working in emerging technologies, and a pioneering resource for new tech, hardware and manufacturing in New York City. Based in the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, New Lab provides the tools and community that unite and support more than 600 innovative entrepreneurs, designers, and engineers representing up to 100 companies in a variety of fields – including robotics, A.I., urban technology, and energy – and fosters collaboration and advancement across disciplines.

CHALLENGE

New Lab – described by Vanity Fair as a “tech paradise” – is a unique co-engineering space that covers 84,000 square feet, contains 9,000 tons of steel, and is home to 100 companies. More than 600 members use New Lab’s private and shared studios ranging in size from 300- to 8,000- square feet. Common areas include an on-site café and specialty areas such as prototyping labs with fabrication shops. New Lab’s community is comprised of small to medium-sized growth-stage companies working in robotics, nanotechnology, connected devices, additive manufacturing, energy, built environment and transportation.

When founders David Belt and Scott Cohen decided to create a space for New York City’s design and manufacturing community to come together to address the current era of manufacturing challenges, New Lab was born. Designed by Marvel Architects of New York City, Central Security Integration Solutions, Inc., was the firm chosen to provide access control for the new construction, which opened its doors in June of 2016.

The building’s sleek design and mix of open and closed studio space called for an access control system and electronic lock solution that was just as innovative as the robots and drones being developed and tested in the New Lab community.

“The building was planned as a very stylish and modern industrial space and the architects and founders knew exactly what they wanted when they approached us to provide the doors, locks and access control,” said Bruno Masciana, a Security Specialist for Central Security Integration Solutions, Inc., who has 35 years of experience as a locksmith. Masciana said New Lab’s architects requested electronic locks manufactured by SALTO Systems as they were familiar with SALTO due to their previous work in Europe.

New Lab Director of Time and Space Girelle Guzman said they sought an access control solution that was easy to manage and able to provide good flow for New Lab community members who would need varying levels of access.

“We have hundreds of New Lab members that come and go according to their own schedules, so the access control system had to be very sophisticated to be able to manage our array of users,” said Guzman. “We also have labs that limit access until a certain level of training is completed and areas that contain sensitive technology that need to be protected around the clock.”

SOLUTION

Masciana said even if the architects hadn’t specifically requested SALTO Systems for New Lab, he would have recommended it.

“I’ve been using SALTO for many years now because their products are so well thought out. They have been using the smart chip concept uniquely and intelligently,” said Masciana.

A SALTO credential “remembers where it has been,” said Masciana, referring to the revolutionary SALTO Virtual Network (SVN) data-on-card technology. SVN allows stand-alone locks to read, receive and write information via an encrypted and secure data-on-card system that utilizes the capabilities of RFID read/write technology. In SVN, all access data is stored on and distributed by its operating credential. When presenting a credential to an offline stand-alone door, not only does this control access rights to that door but, thanks to the two-way communication, the door also writes data – like blacklist information or battery status – back to the smartcard. The smartcard then transmits this information back to the server via online wall readers that update and receive information from the cards anytime and anywhere in the facility.

Masciana and team installed SALTO’s Ælement locks on the partitioned and private offices, and all stairwell doors and doors going into electrical rooms and support areas are outfitted with SALTO hardware, per code.

The minimalistic design of SALTO’s RFID readers look stylish and discreet at New Lab, especially since the décor throughout the facility includes sleek black doors mixed in with industrial steel and age-old shipyard relics like the giant cranes that used to haul ship-engine parts that supplied both World Wars.

In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, SALTO has delivered seamless access control management to hundreds of New Lab’s tenants and visitors via SALTO ProAccess SPACE software and its user-centered interface.

“SALTO ProAccess SPACE is an easy-to-use application with a very short learning curve,” said Guzman, who added that New Lab just hired two new receptionists who had no trouble quickly learning the system. “We have flex memberships. We have members who have open desks. There are open studios, closed studios and private studios. We essentially have an unlimited number of scenarios, yet the software has allowed us to manage it all.”

In addition to managing user access and maintaining a secure facility, SALTO has provided New Lab with another invaluable commodity: information.

“SALTO ProAccess SPACE has allowed us to get granular by showing us how our members are using our space,” said Guzman. “To know when our peak times are, how the prototyping spaces are being used, or the habits of our flex members – just to name a few examples – gives us a better understanding of the service we provide.”

Masciana said SALTO is the perfect access control solution for an inventive company like New Lab.  “New Lab had very specific demands in building this shared community of big ideas,” said Masciana. “SALTO has built a reputation on using innovation to deliver access control and they offered the absolute best solution to provide security and style for this unique project.”
