West Moreton Anglican College secures large campus with SALTO keyless access control

Monday 29 June 2020

Background

Spread across an impressive 38 hectares in a semi-rural setting, West Moreton Anglican College (WestMAC) is a dynamic Prep to Year 12 co-educational Independent Anglican school located 10 minutes from Ipswich CBD in Queensland. Prior to SALTO, the school was using a mechanical key system to manage all access control within the school.

The Challenge

With a large campus and multiple entry points, security and safety for the school community is a high priority for WestMAC. The college had many staff and contractors who had to access buildings after hours and on weekends - sometimes leaving doors open, and air conditioners and lights on. Despite procedures to notify management when this happened, staff didn’t always follow this requirement and it was impossible to check compliance with a mechanical key system.

Added to this was the headache of managing multiple keys for different areas, and replacing them when they were lost.

The Solution

It’s important to work with a great partner to realise the full benefits of a SALTO System, and Network Locksmiths and Security was engaged as the college’s contractor.

“Belinda and Guy from Network Locksmiths and Security have reworked our system here to be the best that it can be. Nothing is ever a problem for them,” says Cathy Twidale, Manager of Facilities, Maintenance and Security at West Moreton Anglican College.

The SALTO SVN Data-on-card electronic locking solution is now installed across 150 doors in 10 buildings which include administration areas, offices and classrooms. Gates have also been secured with SALTO XS4 GEO padlocks. The wire-free and wireless system dispenses with the need for conventional keys. Instead, programmable RFID contactless credentials (such as cards) allow or restrict access to different parts of the school, and audit trails provide the college complete visibility of who accessed what door, where and when. The cards can also be integrated with other school services, and WestMAC is using them for photocopy access and college IDs.

Checking on doors to see if they were locked each night took a considerable amount of time for the college, and they wanted to discourage visitors to the office after official closing times. The ability to control access and automatically secure doors at the end of the day was a real benefit of the SALTO system. Cards can be programmed to allow access to specific rooms or areas within the college for selected periods only, with the doors auto locking at pre-specified times if required. When staff work after hours, it gives the college peace of mind that the doors are locked while they are in the buildings and cannot be left unlocked.

And if card security is breached due to the loss or theft of a card?

“A manual key would require locks to be changed and becomes a very costly exercise,” explains Cathy.

“It’s a simple press of the button on the SALTO system to cancel a card. This is all the more important as we now have the flexibility to give outside users access to buildings or sporting areas between designated times.”

Another powerful feature for the college was the ability to enable a lockdown of the college in the event of an emergency situation. When in lockdown, no one can get into the building unless they have a specific override key, but the doors can be opened from the inside if required.

Belinda Parker, Director of Network Locksmiths and Security explains, “By working with Cathy and her team we installed SALTO into their new senior school administration building and in additional buildings throughout the campus. The installation of a simple lockdown solution using SALTO SVN (activated by a central lockdown controller in the Facilities Office) has provided the college with a quick and easy way to ensure their staff and students are safe and secure.”

With the advantages of being flexible and scalable, WestMAC will continue to roll out SALTO as buildings are refurbished and built in the future.

“Security for our college campus is paramount, and having the SALTO system installed as one of our security measures at the college has helped us maintain a safe and secure environment for staff, students and the college community,” says Cathy.
